"Blue coal" was a prominent brand of anthracite coal in the 1920s – 1970s, famously dyed blue by the Glen Alden Coal Company in Pennsylvania to differentiate its high-quality product. Used heavily for home heating, the brand was marketed through the "The Shadow" radio show.
